Blog # 1

In this blog I am writing on the analysis that Michael Vance created for The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Vance shows the satire of marriage that Wilde created in the play and also show how society portrays marriage . In the play the characters portray themselves to be the opposite of nonchalant when it comes to marriage in a sense that marriage is a very important thing for them especially in the society status that they are in. It is an important factor in their lives but doesn't mean what marriage is to most people.
The satire of marriage that Wilde created was a way of mockery towards society in their concept of marriage. Michael Vance writes "The plot of the play is built upon the desires of two young men to marry two young women who in turn desire to marry only men named Ernest." The whole concept of love and being with the man or women you want to be with is not even close to what marriage means in that play. Also in the analysis Vance mentions how the concept of love and happiness is simply over once you are married. Marriage is mostly about desire and having a specific name to be accepted as a husband. I believe Oscar Wilde did ta mockery of society and their concept of marriage to show the readers in those times society or should we say the high class, that they were so naive to get into marriage having those kinds of concept towards it even though in today's society there is a fifty percent chance that you would divorce your spouse.
